How Indian PIN codes work

A Postal Index Number (PIN) is a 6-digit code used by India Post since 1972. The first digit identifies one of 9 postal zones, the second the sub-zone or postal circle (usually a state), the third the sorting district, and the last three digits the individual post office. That is why every PIN maps to a specific district and state — and often to several branch and sub post offices.

This tool queries the free community api.postalpincode.in service, which mirrors India Post's official directory. Results include the office name, branch type (Head, Sub or Branch office), delivery status, district and state. For addressing parcels, any post office listed under a PIN will route mail correctly.
