PAN Card Status
Track your PAN application on NSDL (Protean) or UTIITSL in under a minute — and understand exactly what each status message means.
Official tracking portals. PAN status can only be checked on the issuer's own site. Use the link matching where you applied:
How to check your PAN status
- Find your reference number. NSDL applications get a 15-digit acknowledgement number; UTIITSL applications get a 10-digit coupon number. Check the receipt email or SMS you received when you applied.
- Open the correct portal. If you applied through NSDL/Protean (most common, including via the income tax e-filing site), use the NSDL link above. If you applied through UTIITSL, use the UTIITSL link.
- Enter your details. Select "PAN — New/Change Request", enter your acknowledgement number (or name and date of birth), complete the captcha and submit.
- Read your status. The result shows the current processing stage. See the table below for what each message means.
What each status message means
| Status message | What it means |
|---|---|
| Application under process | Your form and documents are being verified. Normal for the first 5–7 days. |
| Objection marked / discrepancy | Something in your form or documents needs correction. Follow the instructions emailed to you. |
| PAN allotted, card under printing | Your PAN number is issued; the physical card is being printed. |
| Dispatched | The card has been posted to your address with a consignment number you can track with India Post. |
| Record not found | Usually a typo in the acknowledgement number, or the application is less than 24 hours old. |
Typical timelines
e-PAN (PDF) is usually issued within 2–3 working days of successful e-KYC. The physical card typically arrives within 15–20 days of allotment. Aadhaar-based instant e-PAN from the income tax portal can be near-instant if your Aadhaar details match.
Frequently asked questions
Can I check PAN status with just my name and date of birth?
Yes — the NSDL tracking page offers a "Name & Date of Birth" option if you have lost your acknowledgement number.
My status says dispatched but I haven't received the card. What now?
Use the consignment number shown in the status to track the parcel on the India Post website. If it shows returned, contact the issuer to arrange redelivery to a corrected address.
Is the e-PAN PDF valid as proof?
Yes. The digitally signed e-PAN issued by the Income Tax Department is legally valid proof of PAN, equivalent to the physical card.
