CGST and SGST apply to intra-state supplies. For inter-state supplies, the full GST amount is charged as IGST instead.

How this GST calculator works

GST (Goods and Services Tax) in India is levied at 5%, 12%, 18% or 28% depending on the category of goods or services. This calculator handles both directions: Add GST takes a base (exclusive) price and adds tax on top, while Remove GST takes an MRP or invoice total that already includes tax and works out the underlying base amount.

For a sale within one state, the tax is split equally between the Centre (CGST) and the State (SGST) — for example, an 18% GST charge becomes 9% CGST + 9% SGST. For sales between states, the same total is charged as a single IGST. The rupee amounts are identical either way, which is why this tool shows the intra-state split by default.

The reverse (Remove GST) formula is: base amount = inclusive amount ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). So a ₹1,180 bill at 18% GST has a base of ₹1,000 and ₹180 of tax — not ₹1,180 − 18% (₹967.60), a common mistake.
